About Rebekah Benson-Flannery
Happy New Year!
My name is Rebekah Benson-Flannery and I want to introduce myself. I am grateful to Kelsey for inviting me back to the yoga studio to teach again. I trained at Numi Yoga and then taught in the studio and online. Since my training so much has shifted--my kiddos have grown--now 11, 13, and 16. My perceptions of my own body and what movement is for me have morphed as I have managed a bulging disc since 2021.
I teach research practices and English at the high school level at College Park Academy so I practice humility daily and I ask my students to do the same. I live in University Park, MD, but grew up on the shoreline in Old Lyme, CT. I am both comfortable and uneasy in the DMV, daily feeling the pull of the water and the beach.
I struggle to say no, often taking on more than I find natural to carry and desire to fulfill those obligations with 110% effort. My personal work has always been to counteract those tendencies and slow myself down. My yoga practice--which most often features a slow flow--has been critical to this goal.
I crave movement to still my thoughts and open space for thinking and carve a place of peace. My yoga practice has manifested these needs through intentional holds and finding moments of challenge that stretch my mental and physical expectations of myself. In my teaching, I embrace these ideas as well, taking small steps through each pose to reach a pose that requires concentration and openness; one that pushes all of us but never asks too much.
If you decide to sign up to take the Thursday class, we will practice postures that enhance hip mobility and shoulder opening. We will train to give ourselves grace, expecting only what we can give in the present moment. We will strive to offer the same forgiveness to ourselves that we offer to friends and loved ones.
I hope you join me! Please reach out with any questions: rebekah.benson@gmail.com.
